Meditation for Stress Reduction: March 22, 6 pm (online). Meditation has numerous benefits for our physical and mental well-being. It is safe, effective, and free. This program will be taught by Nirav Sheth and offered online via Zoom. Registration required.
Financial Fitness with Northeast Bank: Mondays in April, 5:30 pm. This series of financial literacy classes will empower attendees with education and actionable strategies to strengthen their personal finances, with plenty of opportunity for questions. Northeast Bank will provide door prizes, including gift cards and finance-related books. Registration is required. April 4: Finance Basics: An overview of setting financial goals, budgeting, cutting expenses, and paying off debt. April 11: Financial Planning and Saving: Saving for retirement, 401k and IRA accounts, as well as emergency savings strategies. April 25: Managing Credit and Debt: Managing credit cards and debt. Interest rates, APR, annual fees, credit payment history and credit scores, disclosures, and fees.
Adopt a Storm Drain Presentation and Celebration: Saturday, April 9, 11 am. Congratulations to Columbia Heights and its residents on winning the regional Community Adopt-a-Drain Challenge in 2021. Residents adopted 163 drains in the competition against Andover, Fridley, and Blaine. Join Lauren Letsche from the Columbia Heights Public Works department, to learn more about the Adopt-a-Drain Challenge, and what you can do to keep rains and waters healthy. Registration required.
Birdscaping Basics: Monday, April 18, 5:30 pm. Offered in partnership with Columbia Heights Schools Community Education. This class will introduce the idea of “birdscaping,” landscaping to build bird habitats using plants that offer food, cover, and resting sites. Native plants also help with soil erosion and water bills, so there is a win for everyone. Instructor Amber Burnette will cover principles of using seasonal diversity and arrangement of plants as well as thinking about your individual space. Registration required.
Conversation Circle for English Language Learners: Mondays, 5:30-6:30 pm. Conversation Circle is a casual gathering of English-language adult learners who meet at the library to practice their speaking skills in a group setting with help from an English-speaking volunteer. No need to register; come when you can.
Library Book Club: Drop in for a favorite book discussion or become a regular member. Book Club meets in the library at 10 am on the third Wednesday of each month, no registration required. March 16: “Vacationland” by Sarah Stonich. April 20: “The Whistling Season” by Ivan Doig.
Children
Coding Club*: Tuesdays, Apr 5-May 24, 4-5:30 pm. Coding Club is a place for youth to learn code while doing projects and challenges like making games, creating apps, robotics, building websites and more. Registration required. For grades 5 and up.
Let’s Clay: Miniature Snacks*: Friday April 8, 2-3:30 pm. Create a miniature pretend picnic. Use them for decoration, play, or turn them into charms. Using oven-safe polymer clay, learn how to prep your materials, shape and form different types of snacks, add expressive details, and receive instructions on how to bake your pretend snacks at home so they’re ready for your next cookout. Registration required. Best for grades 1-5.
Tinker Time*: Thursdays, Apr 21-May 26, 3-4:30 pm. Drop in and tinker with a rotating assortment of art supplies, crafts, and activities to explore. No registration required. Best for grades 1-5.
