Discussing race and racism (even when it’s uncomfortable): Wednesdays, Sept. 20 and 27, Oct. and 11, 5:30-7 pm. As a white person, talking about race and racism is hard and can be very uncomfortable. Practice discussing race and racism in healthy, productive ways. This group is designed for white people, but all are welcome to attend this 4-part discussion. Instructor Nathan Roberts is the co-founder and U.S. director of Daylight Center and School in Kenya. He serves as director of community engagement at First Lutheran Church in Columbia Heights. Illustrated nature poems: Wednesday, Oct. 18, 5:30 pm. Nothing beats the natural beauty of a Minnesota autumn! Get inspired by the sights, sounds, flavors and scents of the season in this multi-disciplinary arts program. Write short poems that capture your feelings. then play around with color, texture, and composition to put your text creatively on paper and incorporate illustration. Funded by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Registration required.
Organizing your important documents: Wednesday, Oct. 25, 3 pm. Now is the time to organize your important documents. Join Toastmaster Steve Smith for this important, informative class. Leave this class with a free binder and a system to get your important passwords and documents (tax, identification, property, etc.) in order, once and for all. Registration required.
Library Book Club: Third Wednesday of the month, 10 am. The library’s Adult Book Club meets monthly in the library’s community room. Join us each month or drop in for a discussion! No registration required. Sept. 20: “Death on the Nile” by Agatha Christie. Oct. 18: “Mad Honey” by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan.
Conversation circle: Mondays, 5:30-6:30 pm and Thursdays, 2-3 pm. Conversation Circle is a casual gathering of English-language adult learners who meet at the library to practice their speaking skills in a group setting with help from an English-speaking volunteer. No need to register; just come when you can.
Consult with the Law Librarian: Fourth Thursday of the month: Sept. 28, Oct. 26, 5-7 pm. The Anoka County Law Library Director will be at the Columbia Heights Public Library each month to answer legal reference questions, help locate legal forms, and provide referral services where possible. Please note that law library staff are not attorneys and cannot provide legal opinions, interpretations, or advice. No registration required.
