Catholic Eldercare will host a free presentation on Monday, Feb. 4, 1:30-3 pm at the MainStreet Lodge, 909 Main St. NE. Born in 1844 near London, Gerard Manly Hopkins was deeply religious. He converted to Catholicism and was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1877. He spent much of his career teaching. In 1878, he became Professor of Greek and Latin at the University of Dublin. He died in 1889, aged 44. Hopkins was also a gifted poet. His imagery, rhythms, and diction were innovative and after his death, he was recognized as one of the most important poets of his times. This presentation will sketch the life of Hopkins and explore his remarkable poetry, illustrating with readings and discussion.
