Public Functionary, Northrup King Building, 1500 Jackson St. NE, presents two new exhibitions in September by Minneapolis emerging artists Yasmin Yassin and Za’Nia Coleman exploring the significance of archiving community-centered dance history.
Opening Sept. 14 in PF Upstairs Gallery #247, Yasmin Yassin’s “Dhaanto” exhibition pays homage to a local Twin Cities-based Somali dance troupe through photos, text, and an opening night debut screening of a new film.
Opening Sept. 16 in PF Main Gallery #144, Emerging Curator Institute’s 2022-23 Fellow Za’Nia Coleman presents her fellowship exhibition at Public Functionary, “Saturday Mornings and The Faces We Remember,” as an entry into the legacy and impact of Hollywood Studio of Dance, known by the purple awning on Broadway and Penn in North Minneapolis. The exhibition re-presents archival footage, photos, and documents focusing on a decade of memories, 1991 – 2001.
Friday, Sept. 29, 7 pm: Public Functionary will host a joint artist/curator conversation with Za’Nia Coleman and Yasmin Yassin as part of Twin Cities Art Week programming. Open gallery hours: Sept. 16-30, Thursday-Saturday, 12-6 pm.
