Women considered to have hysteria exhibited a wide array of symptoms, including faintness, nervousness, sexual desire, insomnia, fluid retention, heaviness in the abdomen, shortness of breath, irritability, loss of appetite for food or sex and a “tendency to cause trouble.”
WARM (Women’s Art Resources of Minnesota) asked their members to submit works that related to the title “Hysteria.” Founding member Beth Bergman curated this exhibit which includes a wide range of media including Susan Hensel’s fiber piece, “Bound and Constricted.” Their mission empowers and supports all feminist artists by honoring the legacy of the past and by building a viable future. By asking Bergman to curate, they call on her long established expertise to create a show that will be exhibited at the University of Minnesota where they hope to engage feminists of the next generation.
Northeast artists exhibiting: Andrea Canter, Karen Wilcox, and Meranda Turbak.
