Unite + Fight is a charity boxing event where police officers, firefighters, and paramedics fight for a fellow first responder in crisis. Every year, nearly 50 public servants from metro area departments, from fire departments in Minneapolis and Monticello to police departments in Brooklyn Park and St. Paul, compete to raise money for a selected recipient who is nominated by their peers. The 2019 beneficiary is Officer Emily Krob of Brooklyn Park Police Department.
Last October, Krob was diagnosed with rhabdomysarcoma, a cancer of the soft tissue that is rare in adults. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy. Additional treatment will consist of radiation and surgery, lasting at least one year. As a result of her treatment, she has been placed on medical leave from the job she loves.
Krob’s co-workers are stepping up to support her in this event. Nearly one-third of the fights will feature police officers from Brooklyn Park. Krob is no stranger to Unite + Fight. In 2013 and 2015, she stepped into the ring to fight for St. Paul first responders, a testament of her tough, selfless nature.
Krob’s story, including highlights of her fights as well as the history of Unite + Fight, is featured in a video that’s going viral on Facebook. The video features dramatic opening and closing sequences narrated by local broadcaster Jason DeRusha with Unite + Fight boxers Steph Johnson of Minneapolis Fire Department and Todd Ewing of Brooklyn Park Police Department. See the video on the Unite + Fight Facebook page: facebook.com/uniteandfight2019/.
The popular event is hosted at Uppercut Boxing Gym and regularly draws a crowd of more than 1,000 people. Unite + Fight 2018 will feature two dozen amateur boxing matches; a cash bar sponsored by Central Avenue Liquors, Skaalven Distillery, and Fulton Brewery; and food prepared by Chowgirls Killer Catering and served by North Star Roller Derby girls. Additional sponsors include Upper Midwest Golden Gloves, Monticello Lion’s Club, Minneapolis Police Federation, Thousand Hills Lifetime Grazed Beef, and Gerhard’s Brats.
