The National Park Service, Mississippi Park Connection, and partners offer a variety of upcoming river events:
St. Anthony Falls Visitor Center, 1 Portland Ave., the Upper St. Anthony Lock and Dam provides panoramic views of St. Anthony Falls and the surrounding mill district. Rangers lead short tours out onto the lock walls and describe how the falls changed the course of history. The Visitor Center is open 9:30 am-5 pm daily, through Labor Day, and Fridays-Sundays in September. There will be additional “sunset hours” Aug 30-31. Admission is free. Mississippi River Paddle Share, a new recreational and transportation opportunity for people who have some kayaking experience, don’t own a boat, and want a safe and enjoyable river experience. Reserve kayaks and equipment online. The cost is $25 for a single kayak and $40 for a tandem. Info and reservations: paddleshare.org.
Bike with a Ranger at The Commons, 425 Portland Ave., Saturday, Sept. 7, 11 am-12:30 pm, a family friendly way to explore the Mississippi River led by a park ranger. The ride begins at The Commons in downtown Minneapolis where stops will be made to talk about the history of the river. Bikes and helmets will not be provided.
