Red Cross Blood Drive
Friday, June 7, St. Anthony Community Center, 3301 Silver Lake Rd., 9 am-3 pm. There are many appointment slots open. Find out more »LGBTQIA2S+ Pride demonstration box tending on Nicollet Island
This event is for those who self-identify as LGBTQIA2S+, or as allies of the queer community. Together with the guidance of Friends of the Mississippi River staff, volunteers will dig in to tend to grasses and wildflowers which provide examples of native prairie plantings to park users. These plants provide ideas of what might create good habitat in their own neighborhoods. Registration is required and capacity is limited. All tools, gloves and training will be provided. On Wednesday, June 26 at 7 pm, U.S. Air Guitar, Route 47 Pub & Grub, Fridley Lions Club and SACA Food Shelf will host the 2024 Minneapolis U.S. Air Guitar Championships. The championships will be held at Route 47 Pub & Grub, 7820 University Ave. NE, Fridley. The participation fee is $15 and tickets to attend are $5 with proceeds supporting Southern Anoka Community Assistance (SACA Food Shelf and Thrift Store). On Thursday, Aug. 15 at 12 pm, golfers and SACA supporters will gather at Columbia Golf Club, 3300 Central Ave. NE, to “drive away hunger” on the course. The golf tournament fundraiser raises over $10,000 for SACA (Southern Anoka Community Assistance) annually. Southern Anoka Community Assistance will distribute free produce in partnership with Second Harvest Heartland on the second and fourth Saturday of the month, July-September, 8:30-11 am (or while supplies last). Distribution takes place in the SACA parking lot at 627 38th Ave. NE. SACA Food Shelf distributes up to 10,000 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables at each event. Columbia Heights Lions will hold a hygiene drive Friday, Aug. 30, 4-7 pm at Murzyn Hall, 530 Mill St. NE. Items needed: feminine products, deodorant, toothbrushes & paste, shampoo, soap. Monetary donations also accepted. All items will be delivered to Columbia Heights High School for distribution within the school district.

SACA Thrift Store Fashion Show
SACA Thrift Store will host its first-ever fashion show, showcasing wedding, work wear, school fashion and Halloween outfits from the store. Models are volunteers and friends of SACA, including Columbia Heights Mayor Amáda Márquez Simula. Purse Bingo will also be part of the event, where attendees can play for just $1 per card for a chance to win a purse. HeightsNEXT fall cleanup
Gather at the Columbia Heights Public Library at 9 am Saturday, Oct. 12, to get safety vests, garbage bags and street assignments. Park assignments are made for families with young children who participate. Each group goes to their area and safely picks up trash from the sidewalks and vegetation along the sidewalks (or park).
