Paddle with a ranger: Minneapolis (heron rookery)
Get up close with a heron rookery (nesting birds may or may not be present), spot bald eagles, peregrine falcons and other wildlife as you kayak down the Mississippi River with a National Park Service ranger. Launch from North Mississippi Regional Park, view the site of the future Upper Harbor Terminal Redevelopment Project and see the great blue herons nesting on their island rookery before landing at Boom Island Regional Park. Free shows are held every Thursday, 7-8:30 pm, June-August on the Mississippi River between the Plymouth and Broadway Bridges. Arrive early for parking. Bring lawn chairs or blanket for seating. Columbia Heights Lions will hold a hygiene drive Friday, Aug. 30, 4-7 pm at Murzyn Hall, 530 Mill St. NE. Items needed: feminine products, deodorant, toothbrushes & paste, shampoo, soap. Monetary donations also accepted. All items will be delivered to Columbia Heights High School for distribution within the school district.

Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, 1509 27th Ave. NE, will serve free community meals on the first Saturday of each month beginning on Saturday, Sept. 7.
