More than 600 people visited the St. Anthony Village Fire Department annual open house Saturday, Oct. 5.
There were many activities, including demonstrations of methods of doing CPR. The emphasis was on how to do things safely.
The most impressive was a demonstration of a fire in a house. Firefighters emphasized keeping your bedroom door shut at night when you are sleeping. They started a fire in the room next to the bedroom. The fire took two minutes to engulf the room. It did not get into the bedroom because the door was closed.
A Hennepin County ambulance crew demonstrated how they take care of people when transporting them to the hospital. They also showed how to break into a car to rescue someone. There were some quizzes on fire safety with awards for correct answers.
Children enjoyed getting hugs from Sparky, the department’s Dalmatian mascot. They also got the opportunity to hold a hose putting out a house fire. Many enjoyed the chance to sit in the driver’s seat of a fire truck. They were able to try on the firefighter’s coat, shoes and hat.
Salvation Army Disaster Services served hot dogs and chips.
