There was a rainbow of colors amongst the rain showers on Sunday, August 13th as Ecuadorian families celebrated their country’s 208 years of independence.
“Because August 10th landed on a weekday when families are at work, we celebrated on Sunday,” explained Segundo Chogllo, president of the dance group Indi Samay. The group performed traditional dances including “Matrimonial.” The group, which started out as just family members has since grown to include many others. Chogllo hopes to that the younger generation of Ecuadorians will continue join and continue their country’s traditions. The celebration was held in El Tequila Mexican Grill & Bar’s parking lot at the corner of 40th and Central avenues NE in Columbia Heights. This is the second year they held the celebration in this location. “We hope to continue holding it here. It’s a very nice neighborhood!” smiled Chogllo.
