Micholandia (mee-cho-LAHN-dee-uh) is translated from Spanish to mean the “land of ice cream and popsicles.” The name is a fun twist on the origins of popsicles in Mexico that came out of the Michoacán state. These frozen treats are so popular that in Mexico virtually all popsicle stores are named “La Michoacana.”
Micholandia is located at 861 45th Ave. NE in Hilltop and was redesigned in January 2023 by husband-and-wife team Maria Ibarra and Omar Hamod. All of the ice cream and popsicles are homemade. They offer 36 flavors of ice cream and over 100 flavors of popsicles. Three simple ingredients are used to make a good popsicle: milk, cream, and fruit. Dairy-free options of ice cream and popsicles are also available.
One of the best-selling items is Mangonada, which is mango ice cream mixed with chamoy sauce (which has a tangy, sweet, spicy flavor)and finished with fresh mango pieces. This drink is a perfect combination of sweet and spicy.
Ibarra and Hamod are expanding their operation. Last year a second location was opened in Ft. Worth, Tex., near the stockyards, and a third location will open this summer in Blaine near Hwy 65 and 99th Ave. NE. The Hilltop location is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Menu at www.micholandia.com .
