Larson Dental gets go-ahead for clinic expansion
The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved the rezoning of properties Larson Dental owns at 1626 and 1628 Washington St. NE. The Feb. 27 ruling allows Larson to take down the single family homes at those addresses and add on to its clinic at 1632 Washington.
NuWay announces layoff
3R’s NuWay Counseling Center at 1404 Central Ave. NE will be short some employees, following a layoff notice that will reduce its workforce by 174 people statewide. The layoffs, slated to start April 30, come after the Minnesota Department of Human Services in February announced it would suspend NuWay’s Medicaid funding because of fraud allegations. Senior U.S. District Judge John Tunheim upheld the suspension. Nuway contested the stoppage, saying that 90% of its income comes via Medicaid. In addition to the Central Avenue location, Nuway has another addiction counseling center in South Minneapolis as well as in St. Paul, Mankato, Duluth, Rochester and St. Cloud.
New Ecuadorian restaurant coming to Central
Barroco is out, and Chulla Vida will soon be in at 2405 Central Ave. NE. The canopy over the door promises “a taste of Ecuador and more.” The Minnesota Secretary of State’s office recorded a business filing for the restaurant in December of last year. No word yet on an opening date.
Yemeni coffee house nears opening
The signs are up on the front and sides of the building at 1851 Central Avenue, but the brown paper on the windows suggests Qahwah House is not quite ready for business. Calls and emails to the Michigan-based company yielded no answers, and a call to owner Aslam Jamal Mohammed was not answered.
New coworking space set to open this summer
The Coven, a member-based coworking company based out of Minneapolis, is set to open in the Nordøst Exchange building, 2125 E. Hennepin Ave., in summer of 2025.
“We have inclusive spaces that are open to small companies looking to make a change,” Lisa Mangelsdorf, the franchise owner of the NE Coven, said. “Our mission is to do the most good in our community.”
Construction started the week of March 3, and the location is set to be fully open by June. Hardhat tours will start in the coming months.
The Coven started in 2017; their first location was on Eat Street. “We have two locations, one in Minneapolis and one in St. Paul,” Alex Steinman, The Coven’s cofounders, said. Five other locations have been opened as franchises. NE Minneapolis will be number seven.
The new space will have an outdoor café, bike storage and a gym for members. “We have programming to come to reach the people in the area,” Steinman said.
