Heights students are AAA nominees
Two Columbia Heights High School seniors have been nominated for the Minnesota State High School League’s (MSHSL) Academics, Arts and Athletics Award. Students are selected for their participation in MSHSL-sponsored arts and athletics while maintaining high academic standing. Daniel Abebaw and Carolina Baldovinos Miranda are eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship and be honored at the Triple ‘A’ on-court ceremony at the MSHSL Boys’ State Basketball Tournament in March.
Abebaw has played trombone in the band in band all four years; he was named All-Conference during 10th, 11th and 12th grade and was selected for All-State Band this year. He also participated in the CHHS Theater performance of “Shrek the Musical” and received a Spotlight Education Honorable Mention for Ensemble Acting Performance, along with the rest of the cast.
Abebaw has been on the track and field varsity team, the boys swim and dive team and he helped co-found the cross-country team, all while maintaining a 3.6 GPA.
Baldovinos Miranda has taken many upper-level art classes and participated in visual arts competitions and shows since her freshman year; she won an Excellent Award at the MSHSL Region 4AA/5AA Arts Festival last spring. She has been on the speech team since her junior year and was named a team captain this year. She has also participated in volleyball, and was named All-Conference this past season. Baldovinos Miranda participated in basketball during her freshman and sophomore years, and joined the track and field team her junior year.
She has remained involved in all of these activities while maintaining a 3.53 GPA and taking advanced placement and concurrent enrollment courses through area colleges.
On the dean’s list
Natasha Suwisanto of Minneapolis was named to the University of Evansville dean’s list, Evansville, Ind.
Sophie Frank, Minneapolis, was named to the fall semester 2024 chancellor’s list at University of Minnesota-Crookston, as was Lucas Kosek of Columbia Heights.
Marquette University named students to the dean’s list: Claudia Huxmann and Jack Maher, Minneapolis, and Josie Johnson, St. Anthony.
Omar Yaish, Minneapolis, was named to the dean’s list at Bates College, Lewiston, Maine.
Karly Daniels-Carlson, Columbia Heights, was named to the Wartburg College fall term dean’s list. Wartburg College is in Waverly, Ia.
Andy Groebner received semester high honors and Tony Manciu, semester highest honors, from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Both are from Minneapolis.
Southern New Hampshire University named two area students to its fall dean’s list: Nicholas Durham, Columbia Heights, and Chinyere Prowell, Minneapolis. Emily McCarvel, Columbia Heights, made the school’s president’s list.
Minneapolis students Jack Hewitt-Perry, Sophia Ingrassia and Thomas Klaesges were named to the dean’s list at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
Joseph Randle and Louis Seiler of St. Anthony were named to the dean’s list at South Dakota State University, Brookings. Seiler had a 4.0 GPA.
Hunter Armstrong, Bryant Felipe, Jarrod Martin, Asiya Mohamud and Hangasa Umer of Minneapolis and Hamza Alaloul, Amena Atia, Sincere Harvey and Anna Tsukamoto of St. Anthony were all named to the dean’s list at Normandale Community College.
Congratulations, graduates
Sophie Frank, Minneapolis, graduated with a bachelor of science in marketing with high distinction from University of Minnesota-Crookston.
Owen Martin, St. Anthony Village, graduated from the University of Jamestown, Jamestown, N.D., at the end of the fall semester. Martin completed a bachelor of arts in health and fitness administration.
