Artist Randy Walker, whose studio is at Dock 3 of the Northrup King Building, will be working with the City of Minneapolis’ Art in Public Places program and the city’s Property Services department. Their public art project will be integrated into the design and construction of the East Side Storage and Maintenance Facility at 340 27th Ave. NE.
Walker, the project design team, and a steering committee of community members will be conducting a number of community engagement activities over the next couple of months to gather input that will help shape the design for the artwork. More information at http://www.minneapolismn.gov/dca/WCMSP-200258.
In addition to public art, the East Side Storage and Maintenance Facility will include an educational storm water management system, native, pollinator-friendly plantings, connector bike and pedestrian trails, and a public gathering space.
Walker was selected by a panel comprised of community members, arts and architecture professionals and the project’s design team from 15 applicants.
Art was made a priority as “the site will be an extremely visible gateway into the City and there will be a large, accessible public greenspace,” according to city spokesperson Rose Lindsay. There is public art incorporated into the south Minneapolis Hiawatha Maintenance facility already.
