Blue roses: New work from John Largaespada
John Largaespada will be displaying his new work Nov. 11-Dec. 11. Opening reception is Friday, Nov. 11, 6 p.m.-10 p.m. at the Rogue Buddha Gallery, 357 13th Ave. NE. Largaespada’s practice is concerned with exploring the computer’s ability to push photography toward a more pure image-making medium reminiscent of painting. Digital manipulation allows him to move from a literal, photographic presentation to imagery that more accurately captures the true emotion of a scene. In the end, the environments portrayed in his work are imagined, not wholly found or staged. Largaespada has exhibited locally and nationally. He has received two Jerome Foundation grants and a Minnesota State Arts Board grant, his work is also in the permanent collection of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, NYC. WARM, a Twin Cities based non-profit cooperative focusing on women artists, will be hosting an event featuring over 30 women artists of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds at various stages of their lives and artistic development. Gallery 427 presents, Geometric Visions, the connection between art and mathematics. The connection between mathematics and art goes back thousands of years. Mathematics has been used in the design of Gothic cathedrals, rose windows, oriental rugs, mosaics and tiling’s. Geometric forms were fundamental to the cubists and many abstract expressionists, and award-winning sculptors have used topology as the basis for their pieces. Geometric Visions focuses on mathematics in the visual arts with four artists who incorporate the use of math and/or geometric patterns into their work to create stunning works that explore the visualization of mathematics. The opening reception is Saturday, Sept. 24, 7-10 p.m., and the closing reception will be Thursday, Oct. 6. Tiny Art Exhibition
Prior to World War II, visual artists rarely worked in large-scale formats. But with the advent of the United States’ Abstract Expressionist movement in the late 1940s, large-format work became popular, along with monumental sculptures, sprawling installations and elaborate site-specific pieces. In response to this bigger-is-better attitude trend, Kolman and Pryor Gallery, located in Studio 395, Northrup King Building at 1500 Jackson Street NE, announces the exhibition, “Tiny Art”, in which many of the gallery’s artists and several guest artists turn to smaller formats to investigate problems of scale and its relation to size.
