At the Hewing: Enhanced Photographs by Candy Kuehn
Although best known for her fabric sculptures, costumes, creative millinery, and ceramics, Candy Kuehn has recently been experimenting with iPhone photography and apps. The results are fantastical images that blend the realistic and the abstract to create magical landscapes of color, movement, and mystery. The Hewing, 300 N. Washington Ave., will host a free happy hour, catered reception with cash bar, that’s open to the public on Monday, Nov. 18, 6-8 pm. An artist-led tour will happen at 7 pm. The Unveiling of M.EX. – Mesoamerican Experience by Aldo Moroni
Friday, Nov. 8, 12 pm-12 am, California Building, 2205 California St. NE, Studio #113, local artist Aldo Moroni will unveil his latest project in progress: The Mesoamerican Experience {M.EX.}. M.EX. is a huge mountainscape in miniature depicting the Mesoamerican experience. Thousands of small scale ceramic buildings will populate the work throughout its 3-year development. The work chronicles the history of Mesoameria, Olmec, Maya, Toltec, Mixtec, Aztec, Spanish imperialism, the Republic and contemporary Mexico.
During this event Aldo Moroni Studios will remember the Five Hundredth Anniversary of the first face-to-face meeting between Spanish invader Cortez and the triple alliance emperor Montezuma. They met at the causeway of the Aztec capitol of Tenochtitlan, current-day Mexico City. This event occurred on Nov. 8, exactly 500 years ago. The result of that meeting was the attempted erasure if Mesoamerican culture. Although the Spaniards caused the death of millions of people and the destruction of the written record, the invasion failed. Today there are many millions of people who speak in a wide variety of Mayan dialects and celebrate their Mesoamerican roots.
“At this moment in time many Mesoamerican children remain in cages at U.S. Borders. This work stands as a protest against the genocidal practices perpetrated against these peaceful people. As both a gringo and a human being, I must speak out against this tragedy. I do so through art,” Aldo Moroni. To support the M.EX. project, Moroni has created a limited edition art-book, The Synoptic Codex of Mesoamerica. Designed in collaboration with Justine Tucker, it is the first of several books chronicling the events of Moroni’s M.EX. – Mesoamerican Experience. Be one of the first 300 people to donate $500 or more to receive a limited edition book. Info: facebook.com/events/386894085570729/.
