Gallery Hours: Saturday, Aug. 3, 3-8 pm. “Just like a dream cannot separate from a mind, the earth cannot separate from its universe; we cannot separate ourselves from one another. This series of paintings is a conversation with you from you to serve as a gentle reminder of your brilliant oneness. Embrace life like a mirror into your true self. Know that every face you see is your own face, every twinkling star is the gleam in your own eye, every leaf rustles from your exhale, and the drum of our heartbeats marches in tandem, echoing in the farthest corners of the universe. But you already knew this … remember?” Anna Laura is a young artist currently enrolled at the Atelier of Fine Arts, studying under Cyd Wicker. She is also in her senior year at Savannah College of Art and Design studying Sequential Art. PechaKucha Night: Are Galleries Dead? Not in NE!
Moving from a Sunday to a Tuesday, and into the Ritz Theater, 345 13th Ave. NE, the next PechaKucha asks the question, “Are Galleries Dead?” and answers it with, “Not in Northeast!” Nine Northeast gallery directors will present 20 slides in 20 seconds each on how they formed, who they represent and how they survive. The program will feature 2001 A Space, Circa, IceBox, Kolman & Pryor, NE Sculpture Gallery Factory, Qarma, Rogue Buddha, Rosalux, and Tres Leches Gallery.
Herman Milligan, prominent art collector and Northeast Arts District (NE-AD) board member, will lead a discussion following the presentations to help inform the NE-AD leadership and the public on what is needed to sustain a thriving gallery culture. The definition of “gallery” may be constantly changing to meet consumer preferences. At this PechaKucha they will explore how Northeast galleries have managed these changes and what NE-AD can do to help.
Bring your questions to the Ritz, Tuesday, July 23, 6 pm. The free event, with refreshments, will conclude by 8 pm, after which people will gather next door at Rogue Buddha Gallery for a reception and informal conversation. Donations ($5 recommended) are appreciated to offset venue expenses and the PechaKucha license.
Pecha Kucha Nights are a project of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District’s HATCH committee, which is exploring the need for an arts center or online clearinghouse.
