Art Flare NE: An Event at the Edge of the Whirl

The 7th Annual Art Flare Northeast: “An Event at the Edge of the Whirl,” will illuminate the northern boundary of NEMAA’s Art-A-Whirl® on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19, 10 am-4 pm. Eleven artists will sell metal sculpture and garden art, arbors, woodwork, dinnerware and artful pots, ceramic garden stacks, jewelry, accessories, and fiber art in the backyard of 3223 Fillmore St. NE. Live music performances will be sprinkled throughout the two day event. Family friendly. Leashed, well­-behaved pets with attentive owners are welcome. This event cross pollinates art in the Waite Park neighborhood with another event on the northern edge of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District: “4 Angels Does NEMAA’s Art-A-Whirl® 2019” at 2653 Stinson Boulevard. Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19, 10 am-3 pm, 16 artists, The Eggroll Queen food truck, and the MN Art Truck. Also nearby is “NEMAA’s Art-A-Whirl® OUTSIDE: Strange Girls Art Market” at Twin Spirits Distillery, 2931 Central Ave. NE. Saturday, May 18 only, 1-8 pm, 14 artists.

Call for art: Watercolor Exhibition & Artist’s Learning Opportunity

Call for Art: Artists are invited to submit art for Studio Pintura’s Watercolor Exhibition, 1500 Jackson St. NE #294. Application Deadline: Sunday, May 18. Exhibition Dates: June 6-July 13, there will be cash and other awards. Info: StudioPintura.com.

Artist’s Learning Opportunity: “The Figure in Watercolor” with Mario Robinson: Friday, June 7, Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9. $480 plus materials, enroll at StudioPintura.com. “The Figure in Watercolor” will focus on painting the live model, who will maintain the same pose for the duration of the workshop. Students will execute a detailed drawing of the model and will learn how to employ a monochromatic block-in. The class will culminate with a full application of color, using thin glazes of color. The objective of the workshop is to demonstrate how a methodical approach increases the depth and sense of realism in watercolor paintings. The instructor will demonstrate each day and provide personal instruction throughout the day.

A-Mill Behind Closed Doors

For the first time in its history, the Pillsbury A-Mill will open its hidden museum to the public for NEMAA’s Art-A-Whirl® and Doors Open Minneapolis, while resident and guest artists display and sell their work. In addition to showcasing an exclusive view down the tunnels beneath A-Mill, Mill City Museum will provide graphics throughout the building showing the Pillsbury A-Mill’s historical timeline. In the Gallery on -1, visitors will be dazzled by a unique show from three local artists entitled “Eidolon.” In the photography studio on -2, their sponsor, Wooden Hill Brewing Company has created an interactive community art project aptly named “Crafting Community,” where guests will be able to paint a pop-up mural drawn by local artists. Stray Dog NE will also be onsite providing speciality sausages, sandwiches, and snacks.
From the caves down below to the specular rooftop views up above, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy. To further entice visitors to explore the building and shop for art from over 50 resident and guest artists, there will be an interactive scavenger hunt with prizes using a mobile app. Friday, May 17, 5-10 pm; Saturday, May 18, 12-8 pm; and Sunday, May 19, 12-5 pm. 315 SE Main Street, Minneapolis. “Repurpose at 700 Central” Grand Opening

Repurpose is pleased to present its debut gallery show, “The Analog Difference,” a group exhibition featuring four local emerging artists. The show will run Thursday, May 16 through Thursday, June 6. There will be an opening celebration with the artists on Thursday, May 16, 6-8 pm. Four artists will be featured in the exhibit: Ben Holmberg, Jess Zottola, Jonathon Rosemond, and Sarah Nicole. Their work  ranges from explorations of unconventional painting methods such as digital void creations to quiet abstract romanticism. The process-based component of each artist’s method of making and searching for balance creates a poetic overlapping narrative. Gallery Location: 700 Central Ave. NE, Minneapolis. Davie Duke shows a selection of new paintings from his “Black and White” series. The series touches on multiculturalism and a polarized society. “First Daughter and the Black Snake” Screening

“First Daughter and the Black Snake,” made by local filmmaker Keri Pickett. This passionate film tells the story of native activist and vice-presidential candidate, Winona LaDuke as she leads the fight against the Enbridge oil pipeline. The screening will take place at Casket Cinema, 681  17th Ave. NE, #145, in the old Northwestern Casket Building, Thursday, May 2, doors at 7:30 pm, film at 8 pm. Edison Autism Art Show

Edison High School’s Annual Autism Art Show will be held Thursday, April 25, 4-7 pm at the Michael Birawer Gallery, 1618 Central Ave. NE, #130. The Autism Art Show is a showcase of student artwork to celebrate Autism Awareness Month. Local artist Michael Birawer has graciously opened his gallery to allow students to highlight their work. Twin Cities Indie Film Director to Premiere 50’s Retro “Queen of Snakes”

“Queen of Snakes,” the latest homage to 1950s’ black and white horror movies by Twin Cities director Christopher R. Mihm, will premiere Wednesday, April 24, 7:30 pm at the Historic Heights Theater, 3951 Central Ave. NE, in Columbia Heights. Doors open at 6:30 pm and guests will enjoy hand-picked, era-appropriate newsreels, classic trailers, appearances by most (if not all) of the cast and crew, autographs, photo opportunities with the title creature, and a silent auction. Ukrainian Easter Egg Festival

St. Michael’s and St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church invites the public to attend their annual Ukrainian Easter Egg “Pysanky” Festival. Dog Day Open Studios at the California Building

The California Building, 2205 California St. NE, will be dog friendly for April’s Second Saturday open studio event.
