The Unicorn Art Show 5th Anniversary

Once upon a time, there was a magical night when all the princes and princesses of the Twin Cities gathered round to gaze upon the majestic beauty of the Unicorn. Time has passed since that legendary eve, but the day of the Unicorn has come once again. Over 100 artists have come together in a group exhibition comprising various media and expressions in honor of the Great Horned One, and now, any fantastical creatures they wish to create. If you missed the previous Unicorn Art Shows due to duels, side quests, or magic curses, this is your opportunity to find renewal of purpose. The Unicorn shares its knowledge with all who seek it with a pure heart.

The spirit of the Unicorn once more draws together artists from the magical kingdom of the Twin Cities and will be joined in tributes by performers and craftspeople from kingdoms far and wide throughout the country. All magical beasts shall preside over another night of fantastical art, and live performances by Planchette Burns and The Preludes to a Blizzard. Don your best prince or princess attire, or masquerade as any magical creature you desire; enjoy many potions at our enchanted beverage station from Twin Spirits, as they conjure up magical brews. Maybe even get your face painted to ensure your place among the fair folk.
The Unicorn Art Show 5th Anniversary Show is a fantasy-inspired art show including Unicorns and all creatures from the Unicorn Realm, presented by The Otherworldly Arts Collective. Opening Night is Saturday, April 6, 4-11 pm. Market Garden Theatre Presents: Jacksonville

The first Fresh Roots Series, the series of developmental workshops by Market Garden Theatre, concludes in March with “Jacksonville” by local playwright and composer Keith Hovis. The workshop will culminate in a free ($10 suggested donation) public staged reading on Sunday, March 31 at the Crane Theater, 2303 Kennedy St. NE, 7 pm, doors 6:30 pm. The reading is directed by Market Garden Theatre’s Artistic Director, Lucas Skjaret, and produced by Brittany Ottum, with dramaturgy by Madeline Kvale. Keith Hovis is a playwright and composer based in the Twin Cities.

In “Jacksonville,” a photographer captures an act of violence and garners acclaim and awards for how the images offer an honest and raw depiction of humanity. As the photos take on a life of their own in the public eye, he finds himself drawn to the woman in the photos, who lived, and haunted by the man in the photo, who died. An exploration of the morals that ground us, the flexibility of truth, and the unexpected destruction of a moment.

Mercury Mosaics Vintage Market

“Demolition Dreaming” DVD Release at Eat My Words

Minneapolis animator John Akre is releasing DVDs of his animated feature, “Demolition Dreaming” at Eat My Words Bookstore, 214 13th Ave NE, Saturday, March 23, 7 pm. He will present a slide show of images and video from the film and photographs and ideas that inspired it. The film is a fictional family story set in the Minneapolis Gateway District.

The Gateway District was a Minneapolis neighborhood near downtown that was completely demolished in the late 1950s and early 1960s as part of the city’s urban renewal program. That lost part of the city inspired Akre to create an animated feature film with a score by Dreamland Faces and narration by Jill Underwood. DVDs of the film will be for sale at the event.

“Demolition Dreaming,” begins and ends at the site of the Quarry Shopping Center in Northeast Minneapolis. The movie tells the story of a sign-painter and his family. They run a residence hotel, in which some other characters of the Gateway live.

Columbia Heights Public Schools Performing Arts Night

Don’t miss this chance to get your “heart in the arts” at the 2019 Columbia Heights Public Schools (CHPS) Performing Arts Night, 5:30 pm, Friday, March 8, Columbia Heights High School, 1440 49th Ave. NE. Sponsored by the Columbia Heights Music Boosters, this year’s theme is “Celebrating Black History Through the Arts.” “This show will celebrate the spirit of African culture and show how it has survived to influence American music and literature,” said Columbia Academy Music Education Teacher Todd Boyd.

Performers representing their middle school and high school band, choir, and theater departments will present selections representing the contributions of African and African Americans to the rich fabric of American culture. Cost to attend is $10 per person, which includes a pasta dinner, student art gallery and performances by choir, band and theater students. Dinner will begin at 5:30 pm. The student art gallery and silent auction will be open 5:30-7 pm and student music performances will begin at 7 pm. The Sister City arts contest winner will be announced at 6:30 pm. All proceeds support CHPS art education.

“The Portrait Show” at Kolman & Pryor Gallery

In our selfie-obsessed 21st century world, what is the meaning of the portrait, self or otherwise? Portraiture has long been its own genre in art, addressed in endless variations and styles. Self-portraits are nothing new as Kolman & Pryor Gallery investigates in its new exhibition, “The Portrait Show.”

Curated by gallery artist and co-owner, Patrick K. Pryor, “The Portrait Show,” includes work by guest artists, Vesna Kittelson, Charles Thysell, Aaron Kagan Putt, Leslie Barlow, Julie Buffalohead, and Nicholas Legeros. The exhibition runs through Saturday, April 6 with an artist reception on Saturday, March 9, 7-9 pm.

To round out the exhibit, Pryor has included a three-foot bronze sculpture of two children by Nicholas Legeros. Legeros’s sculptures can be found throughout the Twin Cities in both public and private spaces. His recent large commissions include a statue of Goldy Gopher on the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota, a sculpture of Sid Hartman for the Target Center, and a 17-foot-high statue of St. Joseph for St. Joseph’s Hospital.

NEMAA Night at Bauhaus: Origami with Jade

The first in a series of NEMAA art nights at Bauhaus Brew Labs, they welcome NEMAA member and origami artist Jade Huynh to demonstrate and teach her intricate origami designs. Participants will learn how to fold their own origami and be able to take home their creations, all while enjoying Bauhaus beer, mingling with other artists and art lovers, and catching up with the NEMAA board. Come meet Jade, and learn a new skill in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. This special event is part of “On the Haus,” Bauhaus Brew Labs’ program to support their wider community. $1 of every beer purchased will be donated to NEMAA to help fund the operational costs that make Art-A-Whirl possible.
