Pledge to Walk or Bike on Earth Day, Receive Prizes

Anoka County residents who take the pledge to walk or bike on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, will receive a free Earth Day goodie bag with several sustainable items from Anoka County Commute Solutions, and they will have the chance to compete in three different contests. To receive the goodie bag, all participants have to do is take the pledge to bike or walk on April 22.

Residents can visit anokacounty.us/3881/Earth-Day to register for these Earth Day opportunities. Upon registration, participants will receive a confirmation email with a description of the three different contests. Winners of these contests can receive one of four AreoGardens, an eco-friendly spa package, a rain barrel, or one of five $50 gift cards to a local, sustainable restaurant.

Participants can also take a photo of themselves walking or biking and post it on their social media profile with the hashtag #AnokaCountyEarthDay for a chance to win one of ten $100 gift certificates to local retailers. Residents who have their social media accounts set to private can still participate by taking a screenshot of their posts and emailing them to meghan.mathson@co.anoka.mn.us or they can send the screenshots to the messaging platforms on the Commute Solutions social media sites. Participants must register for Earth Day to qualify for the contests. All contests open Monday, April 19, and end Friday, April 23.

St. Anthony Earth Day Clean Up

Help clean up St. Anthony parks.  Supplies will be available at St. Anthony parks to pick up litter and/or do some yard work. Show up anytime Saturday, April 27, 9:30 am-Noon. Salo Park will be trash clean up and yard work. Silver Point Park, Central Park and Emerald Park, will be kid friendly. Trillium Park will be yard work only. Columbia Heights Streets get a Spring Cleaning

Columbia Heights Lions International and HeightsNEXT are organizing volunteers for an Earth Day cleanup along University and Central Avenues. Volunteers’ efforts will freshen up local streetscapes and prevent trash from drifting with spring’s melting snow through storm drains into the Mississippi River. Meet at 8:30 am on Saturday, April 20, in the parking lot of Murzyn Hall, 530 Mill St. NE, Columbia Heights.
Bags, safety vests and trash pickers will be available to aid in picking up litter. A group photo will be taken to commemorate the team’s work that day and each set of volunteers will be assigned a section of road where they will pick up litter. After volunteers complete their cleanup assignments, they are invited to meet back at the parking lot of Murzyn Hall to return equipment and enjoy light refreshments until roughly 11 am.
The cleanup will occur “rain or shine,” so participants should dress for the weather. To volunteer, email info@heightsnext.org so organizers know how much equipment to reserve for the event.

Earth Day Fun Run/Walk/River Cleanup

The 5K Bee Run, an event featuring a fun run/walk, river cleanup and Earth Day festivities, is set to attract hundreds of participants to Boom Island Park, 724 Sibley St. NE, Saturday, April 20. Now in its fourth year, the 5K Bee Run is hosted by the Great River Coalition in partnership with the National Park Service, and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

The family-friendly event, which will run between 7:30 am and 12:00 pm, is designed to bring awareness to the plight of pollinators as well as to the natural beauty of the Minneapolis riverfront. The 5K course traverses through the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Following the 5K, participants will be able to take part in an organized river cleanup and enjoy festivities including live music and entertainment, raffle prizes, demonstrations by local bee experts, and more. Photo ops will include a bee-themed selfie station and appearances by Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders and local mascots.

The event’s main feature, the 5K, will start promptly at 9 am. Participants can register for the 5K online for $35, register.chronotrack.com/r/46137, greatrivercoalition.com, or at the event for $40 between 7:30 and 8:45 am. A free kid’s race, with goodie bags, will be held at 8:30 am, children must be age 6 or under and must be registered before the event, either online or in-person. The river cleanup (also free) will start at 9:30 am.

Community Clean-Up

Saturday, May 19, 8:30 am. We did an Earth Day Cleanup in April but due to the late winter snow, we weren’t able to get to the full sidewalk. We are doing our SECOND cleanup on Saturday, May 19 and invite you to join us. 8:30-10:30 am, Murzyn Hall Parking Lot, 530 Mill St. NE, Columbia Heights. Free coffee and donuts afterward. Wear gloves and weather appropriate clothing.
