St Anthony Historical Society Annual Meeting

Sunday, Nov. 17, 4 pm, St. Anthony Village City Hall. Join them for a late afternoon program to share photos from their individual “Archives” of life in the Village since its incorporation in 1945. Mary Henry, a local graphic artist, art educator, and designer of two of the historical books published by the Historical Society, will be with them to describe a new project that she has taken on for the Society. With a working title of “Snap Shots Through 75 Years,” it is being planned for release and sale in 2020, the 75th anniversary of the incorporation of St. Anthony Village. The planned format will be similar to Sunday newspaper magazines. Bring photos with descriptive captions including an approximate date, identification of persons or places, photographer and person providing the picture if available. Of special interest are snapshots that include people in attendance at community events or happenings; photos from the 1940’s and 1950’s are in short supply. If you want your photo returned, please provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope. The Society’s most recent book “Hit the Deck and Pray: The 1984 St. Anthony Tornado,” was released this time last year. This book and others will be available for sale.

Light refreshments will be available. A short business meeting will precede the program. Your invited to join the Society. Since 2005 the mission of their volunteer organization has been “to collect, preserve, and disseminate historical knowledge about the City of St. Anthony Village.” Their funding is solely through book sales, memberships and donor contributions. Support their efforts and join their group. Annual membership is $25. A membership application and return envelope are included. Membership is not required to attend.

MPCA to discuss air quality info from urban sensor network

Air quality in Minnesota is generally good and meets all federal standards. But it could be better, and one of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s goals is to improve air quality in urban population centers.  Last spring, the MPCA installed new air quality monitoring sensors at 44 sites in neighborhoods around Minneapolis and St. Paul. These sensors monitor and send back data to the MPCA on a variety of pollutants including fine particles, ozone, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide. There is at least one monitoring pod in each ZIP code in the two cities. In St. Paul, most of them are placed on light poles in school parking lots, and in Minneapolis they are on Xcel Energy light poles in neighborhoods.

Are there higher levels for certain pollutants? Do different neighborhoods have differences in pollutant levels? Are levels higher at certain times of the day? How much is air pollution influenced by a quiet residential neighborhood or busy roadways? You can view results of the monitoring thus far at pca.state.mn.us/air/assessing-urban-air-quality-project#community. The sensor project is funded by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources and runs through the summer of 2021.

This fall MPCA staff will present information about the project and what the sensors have been seeing thus far at a series of informational meetings. Monday, Oct. 28, 6:30-7:45 pm, Audubon Park Rec Center, 1320 29th Ave. NE.

MPD 2-PAC: Different meeting day

2-PAC, the MPD Second Precinct Advisory Council has a long history of meeting on the second Monday of the month. With this schedule, they conflict with two days a year that city offices are officially closed: Native American Day and Veterans’ Day, which are often observed by closing city offices on the second Mondays of October and November.  Because of that conflict, 2-PAC misses the input from city employees two months of the year. To avoid that, 2-PAC will be meeting on the third Monday of the month beginning in October. The speaker for October is now scheduled to join them on the third Monday, Oct. 15. If there are any issues, let them know. 2-PAC continues to meet at 1900 Central Ave. NE, in the Monroe Village Community Room, gathering at 6 pm, with a call to order at 6:15 pm.

Grief Support Group

A Grief Support Group is offered again at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 4101 Washington St. NE, Columbia Heights. This class is open to anyone that has experienced the death of a loved one. They meet every Wednesday evening for 12 weeks from 6:30-8:30 pm, beginning Aug. 29 and running through Nov. 14. Each topic is self-contained so you don’t have to attend in sequence and includes a brief video seminar, followed by supportive group discussion.
