Summer Camp Capri presents, Four Little Girls: Birmingham 1963

Summer Camp Capri presents Christina Ham’s Four Little Girls: Birmingham 1963, directed by Dennis Spears and Greta Oglesby and featuring Summer Camp Capri middle school-age scholars, at 7 pm, Thursday, Aug. 9 at the Capri Theater, 2027 West Broadway in North Minneapolis. Admission is free.

The play centers on Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, Cynthia Wesley, and Addie Mae Collins, four little girls who are multi-talented and bursting with promise and share their hopes and dreams against the backdrop of the civil rights movement. The realities of the segregated political climate that will put a stop to these dreams swirl around them and eventually culminate in the fateful events of September 15, 1963. This is a play that dares to examine what it’s like to be a child in the most extreme circumstances.

In addition to their experiences preparing the play, Summer Camp Capri students explore a broad range of arts during the 5-week summer session, guided by many talented teaching artists including Oglesby, Spears, T. Mychael Rambo, Diane Robinson of Hollywood Studio of Dance, visual artist Kenneth Caldwell, hand drummer Chico Perez, and others.

GT Artistry Presents: Pie Equals Square

A man of science tries to apply logic to the absurd and abstract. Distant memories, ideas and images smash together, surreal scenes and characters push, prod and taunt. We ask: what is irony? Where is sincerity? Who can I believe?  Our inventor finds himself in a world where the rules have changed and irreverence abounds. Pie Equals Square is a structural feat that constantly evolves and folds in on itself, challenging the timeline of our shared existence. Choreographer Paula Mann’s idiosyncratic, whimsical post-post-modernist movement combined with composer Hans Kruger’s irreverent sound score provides the perfect counterpoint to our roller-coaster world.

Volunteers Needed: Support Adventurous Art at Minnesota Fringe

Volunteers needed to help run the 25th Annual Minnesota Fringe Festival, an 11-day celebration of the performing arts in the Twin Cities. Northeast Minneapolis venues include Minnsky Theatre, Strike Theatre, the Ritz Theatre, and Logan Park. St. Anthony Community Theater Workshops

Three local performance professionals will be leading workshops aimed at budding and experienced performers of all ages. Jan Campbell will be teaching two dance workshops, one for children aged 8-13 on Sunday, Jan. 22, the other for adults aged 14+ on Sunday, Jan. 29. Both workshops will focus on dance for musical theatre performers, all levels welcome.

Kelly Regan will be teaching a stage combat workshop for children ages 8-13 on Sunday, Feb. 19, and another for participants ages 14+ on Sunday, Feb. 26. These workshops will focus on the masking and choreography of stage combat, with a strong focus on safety. Both hand to hand and weapons training are included.

There will also be an improvisation workshop taught by Nathan Weingarden for kids 8-13 on Sunday, Feb. 19 and one for adults 14+ on Thursday, March 2nd. These workshops provide a unique opportunity to learn some special performance skills from local artists and meet other performers in the St. Anthony area.

SACT workshops will all take place at the St. Anthony Community Services building, 3301 Silver Lake Rd. NE Ste B. Dance and Stage Combat will go from 1-2:30 p.m. and Improv will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. The cost is $20. ($35. for the second member of a family and $50. for three or more family members.) Theater Latté Da announced casting for “Peter and the Starcatcher,” Rick Elice and Wayne Barker’s wildly imaginative, highly entertaining prequel to the Peter Pan story that imagines how Peter, Captain Hook, and the rest of the characters we know and love, came to be. Award-winning Twin Cities Director and Scenic Designer Joel Sass makes his Theater Latté Da directorial debut with Denise Prosek as music director. Revel in romance and luxurious harmonies when Legends at the Capri presents “Chances Are…The Johnny Mathis Duets,” featuring Julius Collins and Thomasina Petrus, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20 at the Capri Theater, 2027 West Broadway in North Minneapolis. “It’s been said that Johnny Mathis has done more for romance than champagne, red roses and diamond rings put together. ‘His voice was so romantic and smokey,’ said Dennis Spears, Legends Artistic Director, ‘and the duets he performed with Deniece Williams, Dionne Warwick, Patty Austin and others, were beautiful, sweet and so well-written. Nimbus announces first show at The Crane Theater

Nimbus announces the first show at their new northeast home, an adaptation of the epic poem “The Kalevala.”  Every culture has its tales of gods and demons, warriors and villains, odysseys of creation and epics explaining everything from lightning to the change of the seasons. This October, nimbus turns its eye to Finnish folklore and mythology, where the frost sings songs and the rain writes poems; where stories are born in the bellies of giants and men and gods walk side by side. “The Kalevala” brings us to the fierce lands of the north to deliver a harrowing magical quest, an epic tale with a biker gang mentality.  Nimbus has returned from walkabout after their residency on Central Avenue with a new song of creation to inaugurate their new performance space at The Crane Theater, located at 2303 Kennedy St. NE.  Their new venue ushers in a new phase for the company as they expand their home for Twin Cities Independent theater.  “The Kalevala” opens Saturday, Oct. 8 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 30.  For Tickets or more information about the show visit, www.nimbustheatre.com or call 612-548-1380.
